Listen to this sample broadcast by Dr. Jacqueline Dyer talking about "Perspectives and Approaches to Domestic Violence in the Church" originally recorded on May 13, 2013.
Podcast Summary: The domestic violence community has often disparaged clergy for not providing appropriate support for women who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). However, little is known about actual clergy practice and perspective in relation to this issue in their churches.
This presentation provides information on both clergy perspectives and practices regarding IPV. Activities that parallel clinical best practices are also identified. This session is designed to increase cultural competence regarding Protestant Christian African American churches and clergy, in relation to their efforts to help congregants who are victims of IPV. Last, the presentation identifies recommendations for improved social work outreach and collaboration with receptive clergy for the benefit of their congregants.
